1) It’s improv with fabric!
Unplanned and unexpected combinations of color, fabrics and embellishment make it a completely improvisational process. I never know what the end result will be when I start a piece and I love that. It’s fun to watch it take shape and to know that every piece is one of a kind and completely unique.
2) It’s something wonderful to do with all those scraps of fabric!
My pack rat nature finally pays off when I can use all those saved bits and pieces of fabric from other projects, not to mention getting to use old clothes that I love but no longer wear. It’s also a great way to experiment with different types of fabric: silks, satins, velvets, cottons, upholstery fabric – its all fair game and fun to play with.
3) Lace, buttons, beads, charms and thread!
I just love the process of embellishing a crazy quilt and have at one time or another used just about anything that can be sewn on. A lace collar cut from a stained blouse edges a velvet piece of fabric beautifully, while a single button or earring whose partner was lost long ago finally finds a home. And, then I embroider and embroider and embroider, playing with stitches I learned in my teens and creating a few new ones along the way. Its fun to see how differently a stitch can look with a bead placed beside it or in two different colors.
